According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers 41.6% of the Class of 2016 are either working part-time, have plans to enter graduate school or are actively looking for meaningful employment. If you are looking for a job but have not yet been successful a few thoughts:
1) Remain positive:
Sure. The plan was to have a job upon graduation but in life things don’t always go according to plan. Real character is how you react. There is nothing that can be done about the past. Concentrate on moving forward and be positive. Remember: No one wants to hire or help a rainy day.
2) Cast a wide net and be open minded:
Expand your search. Once you get your foot in the door and perform well, additional roles will present themselves. Your priority is getting a chance to prove yourself to an employer.
3) Set goals and milestones while keeping a routine:
Don’t get into the bad habits of waking up late, sleeping in the afternoons or procrastinating around the house. Find a coffee shop, a library and make that your “office”. Build as much structure into your day as possible.
4) Ask for help:
People like to help other people. Network with parent’s friends, classmates, alumni, professors, peers, etc… Meet people through volunteering (the summer is filled with charity and fund-raising events). Get involved. Have business cards made with your contact information so it’s easy for people to follow up and be in touch with you.
Remember- you did land a job after college. It’s in marketing and your product is you!
