Don’t try and “map out “the next 40 years of your professional life

Over the years I’ve had the privilege of addressing audiences all over North America about today’s transition from academic to professional life. Attendees are usually students along with their parents. I always enjoy these events and the interactive nature by both students and parents regarding the most effective way to develop a strategic job search plan. During each event, I direct a question to the parents in the room asking how many envisioned themselves in the professional role they occupy today when they were their child’s age. 99% of the time the only hands raised are by Physicians. My point: as you enter into the workforce, don’t try and “map out “the next 40 years of your professional life. Find a position that interests you in a company that matches your values. Exceed the expectations of your Boss and good things will happen. Your career in not linear. It will take you places you never imagined and one day your hand will stay by your side when someone asks you my question!
